HOW TO CHOOSE THE MONITORS FOR YOUR HOME STUDIO

It’s something we repeat all who write or talk about sound again and again: one of the most important pieces of your study, if not the most important, are your monitors. Only they would be unseated from the top spot on the podium for the room itself – and its acoustics, go – where you make your mixes, plays, recordings, etc. One of the best is the Mackie CR3. But it would not be fair to consider your room as a proper “piece”, and often craving, pocket, marital prohibition or all at once does not allow us to do or undo too much in terms of acoustics of our home studio is refers (although we will not ever recommend a good acoustic treatment), we will focus on issues purely china shop …Monitors therefore. Enough how important are in any study, regardless of size is not told. If there is a piece of equipment in which the money should be spent, it is certainly in a good pair of speakers. With the world’s best previous results can be obtained hulking, for example, and an interface to the latest and with all the extras and accessories you could need in the next ten years will be tremendously useful and a significant investment, of course.

But if all that equipment does not translate into a good listen, if you’re not able to get all the sound quality you get with other teams to become a reliable acoustic translation that reaches your ears, not only are you wasting money, but you will be unable to make critical decisions as actually sounds tailored to your material. If your recording is out of your monitors severe but not, correctly reproduce bass frequencies, and can hardly imagine that your mixes will work out. Or at least, you will require a painful learning comparing different systems until you learn how to sound your listeners.

Money Matters

Logically, one of the main factors when choosing monitors has to do with the budget. And let us return here a phrase from a few lines above “should spend the money.” By this, we do not necessarily mean you should invest your kidneys in more expensive monitors on the market. The truth is that, in a matter of speakers, you can find models of almost all prices, from just 200 euros (or dollars), up to several thousand of them.

Keep in mind, again that the best monitors on the market will not be so if your room does not have a good frequency response, reflections, etc. So, first, spent more than 2,000 euros a right speaker does not necessarily mean you will achieve perfection in your home sound studio (hence our recommendation to treat the room). But, being honest, on land we move in which some investment is almost necessary to achieve monitors, starting, offer performance all professional as possible, and as little as the possible answer (never, do not kid yourself, it will be at all).Of course, there are many affordable options that will give a more than decent service, especially if we learn to know our listeners. Of course, there are many affordable options that will give a more than decent service, especially if we learn to know our listeners. But what we want to emphasize is this: if you are someone who has no qualms about spending thousands of euros on previous or analog-digital converters, then do not try to save your partner monitors. It would be a terrible mistake!

Nearfield or

Nearfield! Undoubtedly. We are talking about a home studio, so, unless you live in a mansion and t have an enormous room to devote to your recordings and mixes, forget about investing in anything other than near-field speakers. The middle and far field are not suitable for tighter spaces typical home studios, and would not manage to play all content on frequencies that can develop. Also, a good near-field of compact size is easily transportable if you need to work outside study.

Speaking of sizes

How large should be our monitors? This is not a trivial question, since, primarily cone size of our speaker will have plenty to say as to the frequencies that can play. Especially when it comes to low frequencies. Near-field speakers are usually found with cone sizes ranging between 5 and 8 inches. As expected, if you can afford, by budget and space, an 8-inch monitors, the more accurate your listening severe, and the easier it is to make adjustments and make decisions in such a sensitive area. That said, many high mixtures were made with 5-inch speakers. Again, it is known and familiar to them as if they were your partner. Your other couple. Speaker.

Assets or liabilities

The difference between one or the other is that the property includes its power amplifier, while liabilities require one external (a very common formula in the PA local small and medium size). Each has advantages and disadvantages, but, surely, assets are more practical in a home environment. If only by savings in space! As the downside, if your power-amp internal fault repair is likely to be more costly than the speaker – especially if they are medium or small budget – worth. And with the assets you can not control its wattage, and play with the color you can get playing with Watt “hit” the speaker cone.

On the other hand, assets are usually more expensive than passive. For example, the KRK Rokit 6 (six-inch cone) can cost around 100 or 150 euros more than its liabilities equivalent, the KRK R6. However, we must bear in mind that with this, and any other passive model of any brand, another piece of equipment would be necessary: a power amplifier.

Geometry

No, we have not gone crazy and let’s get to talk about math. Not directly, at least. There is much talk for some time about the importance of the geometry of the box in which are mounted speakers. Foremost among those who argue that the edges of a purely rectangular design can affect the frequency content which reproduces the speaker and those who do not pay too much heed to this theory. Those who do advocate models in which these edges are smoothed by bevels and rounded contours. The only way to know if you’ll notice the difference between them, we fear, passes to test one and other in a suitable environment. If you can, and this is the last point to clarify for you to take a decision, no doubt, do it.

Variety

Finally, you do not have to settle for a single pair of monitors in your home studio. The usual practice in any professional studio is to listen to mixes different types of speakers. And we do not talk necessarily, besides those kidneys having to invest a piece of liver to have several pairs of listeners of superior quality. Cheap car speakers, home stereo, or even a laptop systems or phone (the new music players quintessential bad we Despite a few) can serve perfectly for checking if your work will move well to such regimes. After all, not everyone has a pair of studio monitors 8-inch to hear your records at home or while working, right?
